What is a Superbill?

What’s a superbill? And why do I need to know about it?

Superbills are what out-of-network providers can provide for you to submit to your insurance provider for potential reimbursement.

What this means: it’s essentially a receipt from an out-of-network provider (like CAH Therapy) that you can submit to your insurance. Some insurance policies provide reimbursement, whether partial or full, while others do not.

Does my insurance policy reimburse?

To figure out if your insurance provider & your specific policy will provide reimbursement, look on the back of your healthcare card and find the number listed next to “Member” or “Member services. From there, give them a call and ask the following questions:

  • “What are my out-of-network healthcare benefits for behavioral health in an out-patient setting?”

  • “Is pre-authorization required?”

    • If yes, “How do I start this process?”

  • “Is there a co-payment involved?”

  • “Do I have to meet a certain deductible before receiving reimbursement?”

    • If yes, “What is my current accumulation for my deductible?”

  • “Is there co-insurance?”

  • “How do I submit my superbill?”

  • “What does filing look like for submitting my superbill?”

  • “How will I receive my reimbursement?”

Generally, claims take about 2 weeks to process. If you haven’t heard back, call the “Member Services” number on the back of your insurance card. If a claim is accepted, money will be issued back to you or the amount will be applied to your deductible.
